Can Visa's Klook Deal Expand Its Travel Ecosystem in Southeast Asia?

Read MoreHide Full Article

Key Takeaways

  • Visa is partnering with Klook across six Southeast Asian markets to connect travel experiences with payments.
  • Klook's platform and creator network could help Visa engage travelers before and during their trips.
  • Visa's travel-related cross-border volume rose 10% in third-quarter fiscal 2026.

Visa Inc. (V - Free Report) is strengthening its presence in Southeast Asia’s experience-led travel market through a new partnership with Klook. The companies signed a memorandum of understanding covering six markets — Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines and Vietnam — combining Klook’s travel experiences platform with Visa’s global payments network.

Under the agreement, the companies will pursue joint creator programs, cardholder offers and in-destination brand presence. Klook will also join Visa Destinations, enabling Visa cardholders to access travel experiences and related offers across the region. The partnership could expand Visa’s role in travel beyond payments by connecting cardholders with trip inspiration, experiences and offers through Klook.

The move comes as travelers increasingly prioritize experiences when planning trips. Visa’s 2026 Global Travel Intentions study found that 37% of Asia Pacific respondents plan trips around unique local experiences, compared with 29% globally. Klook’s Travel Pulse 2026 also found that more than half of Asia Pacific travelers no longer start planning with a fixed destination, while 23% begin with a specific activity.

Additionally, in the third quarter of fiscal 2026, cross-border volume excluding intra-Europe increased 12% year over year on a constant-dollar basis, while travel-related cross-border volume climbed 10%. Klook’s Kreator Program, with more than 30,000 creators across 88 markets, gives Visa another channel to engage travelers before and during their trips. If that engagement converts into bookings and in-destination spending, the partnership could support incremental payment volumes while strengthening Visa’s cardholder and merchant relationships across Southeast Asia.

How Are Competitors Faring?

Some of V’s competitors in the payments space include Mastercard Incorporated (MA - Free Report) and American Express Company (AXP - Free Report) .

Mastercard is also expanding its experience-led travel presence through Klook. Their Asia-Pacific partnership will offer cardholder discounts and travel privileges while exploring new payment solutions, giving MA another avenue to deepen engagement and capture spending throughout travelers’ journeys.

American Express is taking a premium-led approach to Southeast Asian travel. Through American Express Travel, Fine Hotels + Resorts, airline benefits and lounge access, AXP is reinforcing cardholder loyalty while capturing spending around flights, stays and destination experiences across Asia.
